School History

From Yirol Intermediate to Panekar Secondary

Panekar Secondary School was originally established as Yirol Intermediate School, constructed in 1960 about four kilometers east of Yirol town, Hai-Burtit, along the road to Shambe Port. It was founded through American Aid during the regime of President General Ibrahim Abboud Hamed, and officially opened on 1st April 1961 under the first head teacher, Kamal Abdullah Aziz.

The school was established to address the severe shortage of educational opportunities in Southern Sudan, where communities had long been marginalized in terms of socio-economic and political development. The school served as a founding seed for education in the Greater Yirol area.

The name "Panekar" was inherited from Panekar Village (Tit-Madual), 8 miles from Yirol town, where a new secondary school had originally been planned but never built. The existing Yirol Intermediate premises were used temporarily and the name Panekar was adopted — and it has remained ever since.

Though interrupted by civil wars in 1964 and again in 1984, the school persevered. After the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on 9th January 2005, the school reopened and has since produced 18 batches of graduates from 2007 to 2025, with many gaining admission to public universities and international scholarships.
